How does this work?

Based on the principle of electromagnetism, the Spherosyn and Microsyn scales consist of a stainless steel or carbon fiber tube filled with individually graded high-precision steel balls. The balls are preloaded and calibrated in the tube in a temperature controlled environment.

The read head consists of six coils wrapped around a composite fiber spool. The coils and the necessary electronic circuits are sealed inside the read head using a special casting process. By applying a voltage to the coil, an electromagnetic field is generated in the reading head. Because of the curvature of the spheres inside the tube, the output signal varies depending on the position of the coils over the spheres. As the reading head traverses the scale, the relative axial movement produces corresponding signals which are induced at each pick-up coil.
